Second Life: Series 11 !
The wait is over! Series 11 has officially dropped!
The futon is traditional Japanese bedding, deeply rooted in the Japanese way of life.
Used for restful nights and gentle daytime naps, it has long brought comfort, balance, and quiet moments of relaxation to daily life in Japan.
In an age filled with convenient bedding and mattresses, we return to the origin of sleep—the handmade futon. At Takaokaya, we use 100% cotton filling cherished for generations, carefully handcrafted one by one using time-honored techniques.
As futon makers, we always think about the user’s comfort, adjusting the amount and placement of cotton by hand to create restorative sleep—something machines can never replicate.
There is a reason our futons have been loved and trusted for generations.
The word “futon” is widely recognized overseas and is commonly listed in English dictionaries as bedding or a mattress. In recent years, traditional Japanese futons have been gaining attention among minimalists, urban dwellers, and health-conscious consumers for their simplicity, space efficiency, and natural comfort.
However, when searching for “futon” online, many results refer to Western-style futons—sofa beds or furniture designed for sitting rather than sleeping. These differ greatly from the traditional Japanese Shiki Futon and Kake Futon, which are made specifically for restorative sleep on the floor. This difference has created a gap in understanding between the Western “futon” and the authentic "Japanese futon".
As futon makers, we believe it’s important to share and preserve the true meaning of the Japanese futon—a bedding tradition refined over centuries for comfort, balance, and mindful living.
For over 100 years, Takaokaya has honored this legacy, handcrafting futons with 100% natural cotton filling and staying true to the original comfort and craftsmanship of Japanese futon culture.
When people outside Japan hear the word “futon,” it often brings to mind a single mattress.
In Japan, however, a futon has always been understood as two distinct pieces, each with its own role in sleep.
One is the Shiki Futon (Shikibuton), laid carefully on tatami, the floor, or a bed to support the body.
The other is the kakebuton, gently placed over the body to provide warmth and comfort through the night.
By separating what supports the body from what covers it, Japanese futon culture has evolved with a deep respect for balance, climate, and the rhythm of everyday life.
This thoughtful approach—refined over generations—reflects Japan’s enduring pursuit of truly comfortable sleep.
Our collection goes beyond the classic shiki futon and kake futon, offering a wide variety of futons to suit different needs and lifestyles.

“Gorone” means to flop down and sleep—a simple pleasure rooted in Japanese life. Beds and sofas have their place, but nothing compares to the freedom of stretching out and relaxing. For quiet moments or gentle naps, elevate everyday rest with the Gorone Nap Futon.
To help keep your futon clean and comfortable, we recommend using a cover, as the inner filling of some futons cannot be washed. Each cover is easily removable for convenient care and machine washing, and comes in a range of colors to complement your space and personal style.
