History

Zabuton cushions (座布団) are traditional Japanese floor cushions, placed beneath the legs or body to provide comfort while sitting on the floor. Their origins trace back to the late Heian to Kamakura Period (1185⁠–⁠1333), when a small square cushion called shitone (茵) was used. Made from woven straw and edged with silk fabric, it was a refined item reserved for special use. Over time, its form evolved, becoming the Zabuton we recognize today during the mid-Edo Period(1603⁠–⁠1867).

From Symbol of Authority to Everyday Hospitality

In ancient Japan, Zabuton symbolized power and status. They were used exclusively by members of the imperial court—such as emperors and shoguns—as well as high-ranking Buddhist priests. To be offered a Zabuton was a sign of great respect.

Today, Zabuton have become an essential part of everyday Japanese life. Beyond comfort, they embody Kutsurogi—the Japanese art of relaxation for oneself and for those who matter most—and Omotenashi, the spirit of heartfelt hospitality, welcoming guests with warmth, care, and quiet elegance.
