1. Toji Stitch
To prevent the cotton filling from shifting inside the futon, the three layers—outer fabric (front and back) and cotton filling—are carefully secured with thread. This traditional hand-stitching technique is called “Watoji (和綴じ).” Unlike standard machine quilting, which compresses the cotton, Watoji gently holds the layers in place, preserving the natural loft and softness of the cotton for a truly comfortable sleeping experience.
Please note that over time, some stitching may come loose or break. This does not affect the futon’s functionality, so you can enjoy it with confidence.
2. Thickness
Shiki Futons are made with 100% cotton filling, offering a softness and feel completely different from Western-style mattresses that use coils or springs.
A freshly made futon is fluffy and filled with plenty of air, with a thickness of about 10 cm at its fullest point. As you use it, the loft gradually settles, transforming from a soft, airy futon into one with a firmer, more supportive feel as the cotton fibers settle. Over time, the cotton will compress further, and the thickness may reduce to roughly half of its original height.
Even as the futon becomes thinner, you can still enjoy the firm yet comfortable “resilience” unique to cotton filling. If you feel you need extra support, placing a thin urethane mat or similar under the futon can enhance comfort and provide a better night’s sleep. We recommend a medium-firm urethane mattress (neither too soft nor too hard) and suggest avoiding memory foam.
3. Joint Seam
For semi-double and double-sized futons, the fabric width requires a joint seam. As a result, patterned fabrics may show slight misalignment at the seams. We appreciate your understanding.
Single-sized futons do not have a joint seam. Custom sizes are also available upon request, so please feel free to contact us for details.
Thickness Comparison
This photo shows a side-by-side comparison between our standard thickness (approx. 10 cm / 4 in) and extra-filled thickness (approx. 13 cm / 5 in), taken fresh at our workshop right after they were made.
Our futons are made with 100% natural cotton and individually hand-crafted by master artisans. Freshly made futons hold a significant amount of air, giving them an exceptionally soft, fluffy "loft" (apparent thickness). Because of this natural trait, providing exact, rigid measurements is difficult.
Additionally, unlike rigid bed mattresses, a futon naturally compresses when you lie down and apply weight. Please use this photo as a general visual reference when deciding whether to choose the extra-filled option.

Because each piece is handmade and natural cotton reacts to changes in season, weather, and humidity, slight variations in finished thickness will occur—even when using the exact same amount of cotton.
Natural Settling Over Time
Regardless of whether you choose the standard or extra-filled type, natural cotton fibers inherently compress and settle with regular use. Over time, the futon will settle to roughly half of its initial newly made thickness. We kindly ask for your understanding of this natural characteristic of traditional cotton futons.
Vacuum Compression Packaging
Depending on the destination country, your futon may be shipped in vacuum-compressed packaging. We compress the futon only to a safe extent that protects its quality. However, please open the compression bag immediately upon delivery and air out the futon. Leaving it compressed for an extended period may permanently affect its thickness and fluffiness.

- Length Recommendation: We generally recommend choosing a futon length that is 35–40 cm (14–16 inches) longer than your height for optimal comfort and complete coverage.
- Matching Your Set: If you are purchasing both a Shiki Futon and a Kake Futon, we recommend ordering the same size for both (e.g., Shiki Futon: Single [100×210 cm], Kake Futon: Single [150×210 cm]).
While there is no strict rule, a properly sized Kake Futon fully drapes over the Shiki Futon, blocking cold air from seeping in and keeping you warm all winter long.

I bought a shikifuton, kakefuton and tatami mats. They are of excellent quality and craft. I have gotten great rest and great sleep. Alex was very helpful and friendly throughout the process of selecting the items. I highly recommend Takaokaya!

It's as beautiful and comfortable as I thought it would be, you can easily tell this is a quality futon as well. I bought tatami mats for a queen sized bed and placed them in a bed frame and placed this futon set on top, it works amazingly well and allows good air flow. Twice a week I sun the futon my draping it over my desk chair in front of my bedroom windows, one side per day when I leave for work and then flip it and do the other side the next day and the futon stays even and fluffy, it's not so heavy that it's unmanageable at all.
I opted to get the matching comforter and summer comforter as well, but as someone whose body runs hot I don't think I'll be using the matching comforter too much even in winter, it is heavy and absolutely warm which is what you'd want. The summer comforter is sized for one person and absolutely perfect, light, airy, but keeps you plenty warm, but not excessively so, perfect for someone like me.
What people say is true and it takes at least a few days of sleeping on the futons to get used to it, but after you do it feels great. it does promote back sleeping, so side sleepers beware, it can cause a little soreness in your hips, but with adjusting how you lay that can be avoided, but sleeping on your back is better for you anyway.
I would really really caution any international buyers, don't make the mistakes I did, be 100% sure you know what you want. I thought I had the comforter in my set, but the cart just hadn't updated, quickly bought through Shop pay, and realized the mistake too late and had to make a second order, and boy does that international shipping hurt.

The Shiki Futon, the cover, and the pillow are all incredibly well-made and extremely comfortable. The scent coming off the natural materials used to make them is lovely and you can feel the craftsmanship in all three products.
The customer service is great as well. I had an issue with the website at checkout where some of the items in my order were incorrectly marked as not being shippable to my country (Spain). I contacted customer service and a dedicated team member helped me complete my order with all the items included. Throughout the whole process I was kindly contacted several times to make sure every detail was correct.
While finishing the order I also asked several questions regarding the futon and how to take care of it. The same team member answered all of them thoroughly while making sure I was satisfied with the answers.
Overall, I think Takaokaya is an outstanding and refreshingly humane business, something which, unfortunately, nowadays seems to be a rare occurrence. I would happily order from Takaokaya again without hesitation.

I purchased the Shiki Futon Mattress, Tri-fold Tatami, Long Pillow, and several matching covers, and I’m genuinely happy with everything. The quality is excellent, the materials feel beautiful, and you can really see the care and attention to detail in each item. The futon is comfortable, supportive, and very well made, and the covers and pillows are just as lovely.
What stood out the most to me was the customer service. From the beginning, one dedicated team member helped me through the whole process and contacted me several times to make sure every detail of my order was exactly right. That kind of personal care and attentiveness is rare and very much appreciated.
I also ordered a custom-made item based on my wishes, and it turned out even better than I had hoped. It’s clear that Takaokaya takes real pride in both their craftsmanship and their customers’ satisfaction.
They also kindly arranged expedited shipping from Japan to Iceland so everything would arrive in time for a family member’s big birthday. That meant a lot to me, as it was a very special gift, and I truly appreciate the extra effort they made.
Overall, it was a smooth and enjoyable experience from start to finish, with beautiful products and outstanding service. I would happily order from Takaokaya again.

Slept on a Shikibuton during my very first trip in Japan. Now I owned a beautiful set for myself. The comfort and skilled craftsmanship is very apparent. Had better sleep in it than my mattress. Admittedly heavier than I initially thought so it’s a bit of a workout to keep care of but it’s a healthy routine to get used to.
