The Quiet Elegance of Gakubuchi-Shitate
Our duvets are crafted using Gakubuchi-shitate (picture-frame tailoring), a traditional Japanese technique passed down through generations.
Historically, Japanese bedding was tailored from kimono fabric rolls (tanmono). Because these rolls were exceptionally narrow—just 36 to 38 cm wide—a single duvet (150 cm wide) required stitching four fabric panels side by side. With each roll limited to roughly 12.5 meters, artisans needed a clever way to conserve this precious silk or cotton. Their solution was the "picture-frame" technique: framing the outer edges with a complementary fabric to preserve the material while making the central pattern pop.
Modern mass-produced bedding simply stitches front and back fabrics together. By contrast, we believe this labor-intensive method is a quiet luxury that only master artisans can achieve. Combining refined visual elegance with exceptional comfort, we invite you to experience the unmatched quality of true Japanese craftsmanship.
1. Toji Stitch
To prevent the cotton filling from shifting inside the futon, the three layers—outer fabric (front and back) and cotton filling—are carefully secured with thread. This traditional hand-stitching technique is called “Watoji (和綴じ).” Unlike standard machine quilting, which compresses the cotton, Watoji gently holds the layers in place, preserving the natural loft and softness of the cotton for a truly comfortable sleeping experience.
Please note that over time, some stitching may come loose or break. This does not affect the futon’s functionality, so you can enjoy it with confidence.
2. Frame & Lining
For the frame and lining, we use a traditional unbleached cotton fabric known as kibata. After weaving, the fabric undergoes only a simple warm-water wash—free from any bleaching or chemical dyeing. This preserves the simple, raw beauty of the natural fibers and gives it a delightfully soft feel against the skin.
You may notice tiny dark specks scattered across the surface; these are completely natural remnants of the cotton plant's leaves and husks. They are entirely harmless, so please rest assured and enjoy the pure, unrefined comfort of natural cotton.
3. Joint Seam
Due to the width of the fabric, kake futons require a seam. As a result, patterned fabrics may have slight misalignments where the pieces meet. We appreciate your understanding.

Tip: If you are planning to purchase a Shiki Futon as well, we generally recommend choosing the same size for both your Shiki Futon and Kake Futon (e.g., Shiki Futon: Single [100x210 cm], Kake Futon: Single [150x210 cm]).
While there is no strict rule, a properly sized Kake Futon fully covers the Shiki Futon during winter, blocking cold air from seeping in and keeping you warm.
