The Floor is Your Sanctuary: Rediscovering the Joy of "Gorone"
In Japan, there is a word for the art of informal relaxation: Gorone (pronounced go-ro-neh). It literally means to "flop down" and relax.
For generations, the Japanese have mastered this art of informal relaxation. Whether lining up three zabuton cushions to watch TV or curling up with a favorite book, this "in-between" rest is considered a supreme everyday luxury. It isn’t quite the deep sleep of bedtime, nor is it just a quick nap. Gorone is about flipping the "off" switch—decompressing and resetting without committing to a full night's sleep.
Even in a world where Western-style furniture is the norm, there remains something uniquely grounding about being close to the floor. It is a space where we shed our public personas and return to our most relaxed selves. We often start on the sofa, only to find ourselves migrating to the floor, leaning against the cushions, and finally stretching out completely.
That instinctive comfort is why we are re-introducing this timeless Japanese tradition for the modern home with our handcrafted Gorone Nap Futon.
All of our products are made-to-order. Each piece is handcrafted specifically for you once your order is confirmed. Please allow approximately 14-20 business days for production before your item is shipped.

Inspired by the Japanese word "goron" (ごろん)—the comforting feeling of flopping down to relax—this futon transforms a brief pause into an indulgent experience.
Far lighter and more adaptable than a conventional shiki futon, it unrolls effortlessly to form your personal haven of rest, anywhere in your home. Express your individual style by choosing from our collection of fabrics, beautiful hues, and timeless motifs.
Select from 3 distinct layouts to create your look:
Personalize your Gorone with Takaokaya’s collection of nearly 60 cotton fabrics. Whether you prefer timeless solids, classic Japanese motifs, or modern Nordic prints, you can easily choose a style that complements your interior and personal taste.
Our solid fabrics feature Murazome, a signature uneven dyeing technique. By stripping color from the cloth while simultaneously applying new dye, this process creates a subtle, streaked texture—giving every fabric a unique depth and character.
It features a washable cover, making maintenance quick and simple. Instead of a zipper, the cover wraps smoothly over the futon and ties securely with wood beads.
When not in use, simply roll it up and fasten it using the attached ties for compact, space-saving storage.
