Where Ancient Craft Meets Modern Rest: The Hikizome Gorone Futon
In Japan, there is a specific word for the art of informal relaxation: Gorone (pronounced go-ro-neh). It literally means to "flop down" and relax.
For generations, the Japanese have mastered this art of unwinding. Whether lining up three zabuton cushions to watch TV or curling up with a favorite book, this "in-between" rest is considered a supreme everyday luxury. It isn’t quite the deep sleep of bedtime, nor is it just a quick sit-down; Gorone is about flipping the "off" switch—decompressing and resetting without fully committing to the night.
To enhance the Gorone experience, we use Hikizome (引き染め), a traditional Japanese "brush-dyeing" technique. In this process, fabric is stretched taut while artisans hand-paint water and pigment to create a delicate, ethereal blurring effect. Also known as Bokashi-zome ("gradient dyeing"), this method results in a soft, beautiful finish with a depth of color that no machine can replicate.

Due to the width of our linen fabric, this Gorone Futon features a framed design. While we use Torinoko for the frame and reverse side as standard, we invite you to personalize your piece. If you would prefer a different linen color for these areas, please specify your choice in the notes section at checkout.

All of our products are made-to-order. Each piece is handcrafted specifically for you once your order is confirmed. Please allow approximately 14-20 business days for production before your item is shipped.

This set features a cotton-filled product (cushion / futon insert) with a removable cover made by linen. To ensure its longevity, please follow these care instructions:
Washing
- Do not wash at home. This item is not suitable for home laundering.
- Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, gently dab the area with a damp cloth as soon as possible. Avoid rubbing harshly, as this may damage the fabric.
- Professional Cleaning: If deep cleaning is necessary, please consult a professional cleaner specializing in futons or heavy bedding.
Drying
- Sun drying is possible. However, please be aware that dark-colored items may fade if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.
Storage
- Store in a well-ventilated area. Before long-term storage, we recommend drying the item in the sun to remove any lingering moisture.
- Moisture Prevention: Cotton filling is sensitive to humidity. To prevent moisture buildup and mold, do not store in airtight plastic bags. Instead, use a breathable material such as a non-woven fabric bag.
Please refer to the care label with laundry symbols sewn inside before washing. Detailed explanations for each symbol are provided below:

About Hikizome
Hikizome (literally “pull-dyeing,” referring to the motion of drawing a brush across the fabric) is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique in which a bolt of fabric is stretched taut and carefully brushed by hand with layers of water and dye. This method is also known as bokashizome, meaning “gradual shading” or “blur dye.”
Each piece is hand-dyed by skilled artisans, one by one. This careful process embodies the beauty of tradition.

Unlike the cotton version, the linen Gorone Nap Futon features a sleek, frame-style design for a refined, modern look. You can personalize the center section by selecting your favorite color from Hikizome.

It also features a washable cover, making maintenance quick and simple. Instead of a zipper, the cover wraps smoothly over the futon and ties securely with fabric ribbons. When not in use, simply roll it up and fasten it with the wooden beads attached at both ends for compact, space-saving storage.
