We place great emphasis on and take extreme care during the stuffing process because it determines the comfort level as well as the longevity of the finished products. Our craftsmen work meticulously to ensure that the futon can retain and maintain its shape and fluffiness with daily use. To make the futons, we use many layers of cotton filling, piling layer after layer to the center of the futon repeatedly. The watoji stitch is then used to secure the cotton filling in place which also acts as decorations. I initially contacted Takaokaya to enquire about a Shiki Futon. Customer service promptly answered all my questions. Since I planned to be in Kyoto a few weeks after my first contact I decided to stop by their showroom/office/factory. Unlike many web sites these days this is a real fully staffed company with a real office, showroom, factory and customer service. It's no wonder they are the gold standard for authentic handmade futons. They are custom made on the day quoted. Their materials are all natural. They are competitively priced. They are beautiful, comfy and you receive exactly what you order. Customer service was very helpful in emails. Got the option to fill the middle part of the futon more. The futon is easy to fold and is pretty easy to handle even with an injured arm. Shipping is quick. Happy with it so far.

shiki futon (custom size) superb!!!

I've been using my futon for 1.5 years now and its still amazing as the day I got it. Every time I hang it up for a few hours to air it out, it feels as fluffy and brand new as the day I first got it.
It truly gives the right softness and firmness for comfortable sleep. Whether I sleep on my back or side, it's still very comfy.
My only regret is not buying takaokaya's futon covers when I bought my futon. I think they would look amazing and fit better than the covers I use now.
I definitely recommend this product to anyone considering a futon, and especially to anyone who's gotten back pain from uneven matresses.
