The Quiet Elegance of Gakubuchi-Shitate
Our duvets are crafted using Gakubuchi-shitate (picture-frame tailoring), a traditional Japanese technique passed down through generations.
Historically, Japanese bedding was tailored from kimono fabric rolls (tanmono). Because these rolls were exceptionally narrow—just 36 to 38 cm wide—a single duvet (150 cm wide) required stitching four fabric panels side by side. With each roll limited to roughly 12.5 meters, artisans needed a clever way to conserve this precious silk or cotton. Their solution was the "picture-frame" technique: framing the outer edges with a complementary fabric to preserve the material while making the central pattern pop.
Modern mass-produced bedding simply stitches front and back fabrics together. By contrast, we believe this labor-intensive method is a quiet luxury that only master artisans can achieve. Combining refined visual elegance with exceptional comfort, we invite you to experience the unmatched quality of true Japanese craftsmanship.
1. Toji Stitch
To prevent the cotton filling from shifting inside the futon, the three layers—outer fabric (front and back) and cotton filling—are carefully secured with thread. This traditional hand-stitching technique is called “Watoji (和綴じ).” Unlike standard machine quilting, which compresses the cotton, Watoji gently holds the layers in place, preserving the natural loft and softness of the cotton for a truly comfortable sleeping experience.
Please note that over time, some stitching may come loose or break. This does not affect the futon’s functionality, so you can enjoy it with confidence.
2. Frame & Lining
For the frame and lining, we use a traditional unbleached cotton fabric known as kibata. After weaving, the fabric undergoes only a simple warm-water wash—free from any bleaching or chemical dyeing. This preserves the simple, raw beauty of the natural fibers and gives it a delightfully soft feel against the skin.
You may notice tiny dark specks scattered across the surface; these are completely natural remnants of the cotton plant's leaves and husks. They are entirely harmless, so please rest assured and enjoy the pure, unrefined comfort of natural cotton.
3. Joint Seam
Due to the width of the fabric, kake futons require a seam. As a result, patterned fabrics may have slight misalignments where the pieces meet. We appreciate your understanding.

Tip: If you are planning to purchase a Shiki Futon as well, we generally recommend choosing the same size for both your Shiki Futon and Kake Futon (e.g., Shiki Futon: Single [100x210 cm], Kake Futon: Single [150x210 cm]).
While there is no strict rule, a properly sized Kake Futon fully covers the Shiki Futon during winter, blocking cold air from seeping in and keeping you warm.

Incredible quality and delightful service.
After staying in Japan for a few months, I fell in love with their kakebuton comforters. When I arrived home in the US, I researched where I could purchase one and decided to order from Takaokaya.
I wanted the kakabuton for my Western-sized bed, so I sent an email to create a custom W210 x L230cm kakefuton. Valery responded promptly with perfect English and sent me an invoice so I could pay.
The kakefuton took around a week to create and another week to arrive via DHL. I unboxed it and found a hand written note from Valery expressing her gratitude for my support. That put a smile on my face. I took the futon out and was immediately impressed. Not only was the comforter beautiful, but the design and craftsmanship were perfect.
The Onando fabric has a deep, rich blue tone to it and the kibata unbleached cotton shell is unbelievably soft. The cotton stuffing is packed tight, giving it a lot of heft. This is the exact quality that I've come to expect from Japanese artisan goods.
As for functionality, it keeps me warm on the coldest of Minnesota's winter nights. In fact, it is so warm that I could get away with turning off the house heating at night. It should be noted that it isn't practical to sleep under the kakefuton in the summer months. It is far too warm.
A booklet of care instructions was included in the box. It is not machine washable and its weight makes it difficult to properly hang dry. They claim that airing it out under the sun is necessary. I don't make a conscious effort to do this, but the sun does shine on it and I haven't had any issues with it smelling.
I was concerned about staining it, so I contacted Valery again to get a custom frame-style cover made. The ordering and shipping process was the same as the comforter. The frame-style cover maintains the same style as the comforter, but I got it in Shibori Green fabric. I am happy with that choice since it adds a pop of Japanese style flare to my room.The cover does exactly what it should: protect and maintain the appearance/feel of the kakefuton.
Regarding pricing, I spent nearly 700 USD on the kakefuton and the cover (shipping + duties included). I am okay with paying high prices for superb craftsmanship, but it can be scary to spend that much when you're not able to see the items in person beforehand. Nonetheless, it worked out in my case.
I've had the kakefuton for around two years now and it doesn't look a day older than when I received it. I love my comforter and would highly recommend Takaokaya.

I ordered 3 kake futon comforters for me and my family. I have never had such a comfortable comforter. They keep us warm and cozy down to 60ºF (15ºC), and we are still comfortable when the bedroom is closer to 70ºF (20ºC).
We ordered the frame-style cover to go with it, and the Takaokaya team kindly reached out to say they could make us plain kake futon in an off white to save us some money, since the frame-style cover would highlight our fabrics of choice. I really appreciated this since it wasn't an option on the website.
We have two in korinoko and one in ichimatsu green. Both are lovely. I suspect the zipper style frame cover is harder to put on than the regular cover, but it was worth it for us.

I have always had trouble with waking up multiple times a night due to back pain and other old injuries I’ve sustained from various athletic activities and I heard that a more firm bed would help. I decided to go all the way and purchase a shikibuton and kake futon from Takaokaya because I was looking for a quality product. I can’t describe how much this changed the my sleep for the better and in more ways than just getting quality sleep. First, the materials exceeded expectations. The beautiful fabrics and the detailed designs made using the set a pleasure and they look incredible. Second, the act of putting the futon away daily makes my room feel cleaner and less cluttered. I really enjoy the fact that I have more usable space and having less furniture helps calm the mind. Finally, I’ve been able to sleep soundly through the night since I don’t toss and turn constantly to find a comfortable position. While it did take a few nights to adapt to, my sleep now is exceptionally restful and I am far less groggy in the mornings. I would also like to highlight the amazing customer service. I had a somewhat unique request when it came to shipping and the team went above and beyond to ensure that I was taken care of. This will not be the last time I purchase a product from Takaokaya and I don’t think I will ever go back to another traditional western mattress.

The blanket is great for feeling cozy and staying warm in the winter. The fabric is very soft and feels great against the skin.
The blanket itself is thick with a lot of structure, and so it stays on you really well at night. My kid loves using it for building forts and playing with his stuffies. It’s thick and sturdy enough that they can use it to make a slide from the couch to the floor. It’s just beautifully made and a joy to use. I always enjoy the considerate handwritten notes that they send too.

We purchased a single size (150x210 cm) Kake Futon Comforter in Petit Flower Bluegreen with a green Hanakomon for my mother who is also from Japan. She LOVES the comforter!
It is true to color from the website and fits a USA standard twin size bed perfectly. The quality is outstanding in both material and craftsmanship. We can tell Takaokaya takes great care when making each piece.
