*Please note: In Japan, futon sizes are traditionally based on the measurements of the outer fabric casing before it is stuffed. Accordingly, the sizes listed in our store refer to these dimensions prior to filling. Because our Shiki Futons are filled with a generous amount of 100% pure cotton, the product gains significant volume. As the cotton fills the casing, the overall width and length naturally decrease; typically, the finished width is about 7 cm shorter, and the length about 10 cm shorter than the casing measurements. A freshly made futon is lofty and filled with air, measuring approximately 10 cm (3.9 in) at its fullest point. With regular use, the fibers will gradually settle and compress, transforming from a soft, airy feel into a firmer, more supportive surface. Over time, the thickness may reduce to roughly half its original height. Even as the futon settles, you will continue to enjoy the firm yet comforting "resilience" unique to natural cotton. For those who prefer extra cushioning, we recommend placing a thin urethane mat underneath to enhance support.

Care

This set features a cotton-filled product (cushion / futon insert) with a removable cover made by cotton. To ensure its longevity, please follow these care instructions:

 

Washing

  • Do not wash at home. This item is not suitable for home laundering.
  • Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, gently dab the area with a damp cloth as soon as possible. Avoid rubbing harshly, as this may damage the fabric.
  • Professional Cleaning: If deep cleaning is necessary, please consult a professional cleaner specializing in futons or heavy bedding.

Drying

  • Sun drying is possible. However, please be aware that dark-colored items may fade if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Storage

  • Store in a well-ventilated area. Before long-term storage, we recommend drying the item in the sun to remove any lingering moisture.
  • Moisture Prevention: Cotton filling is sensitive to humidity. To prevent moisture buildup and mold, do not store in airtight plastic bags. Instead, use a breathable material such as a non-woven fabric bag.

No Tumble Dry

Ironing: Iron at a maximum temperature of 160°C (medium heat).
Dry Cleaning
Dry Cleaning: Professional dry cleaning is permitted using petroleum solvents.
Wet Cleaning
Wet Cleaning: Very gentle professional wet cleaning is permitted.
Important Note on Detergents
For natural (ecru) or light-colored fabrics, we recommend using non-fluorescent detergents. Detergents containing optical brighteners (fluorescent agents) may cause the color to change or look unnaturally pale/bluish.

about aizome-fu

Aizome (藍染め) is the Japanese word for indigo dye. The dye is naturally extracted from the leaves of the Indigofera Tinctoria plant, which creates a beautiful indigo shade of blue. Our Aizome-Fu fabrics with traditional Japanese patterns are meant to replicate that same beautiful look that the indigo dye creates.

why is our shiki futon so comfortable?

We place great emphasis on and take extreme care during the stuffing process because it determines the comfort level as well as the longevity of the finished products. Our craftsmen work meticulously to ensure that the futon can retain and maintain its shape and fluffiness with daily use. To make the futons, we use many layers of cotton filling, piling layer after layer to the center of the futon repeatedly. The watoji stitch is then used to secure the cotton filling in the place which also acts as decoration. Though the process is tedious, our craftsmen at Takaokaya, desire to create the most comfortable futons, so that our users can enjoy true relaxation for a good night’s rest. Every night, you will be smiling as you feel your body unwinding and melting away the stresses of the day when you lay down on your Takaokaya futon for the best sleep ever.

As cotton fibers are hollow and have a natural twist structure, our futons have excellent moisture absorption in the summer heat and cozy in the winter chill, making them suitable for all seasons. Our futons also have good resilience due to our choice selection of cotton. Sunning your futon regularly not only helps to fluff up your futon but also disinfect it. The cotton filling we used for stuffing Shiki Futon is specially selected so that our futons are plushy and yet firm to provide ample support for a healthy spine.

Takaokaya Shiki Futon Mattress Cover is specially designed with pockets on both ends to allow for the Shiki Futon to be slipped in and out without much hassle. The small openings at the side of the pockets allow you to adjust your Shiki Futon Mattress for a perfect fit. To clean, simply put the cover into the washing machine.
