Our craftsmen work meticulously to ensure that the futon can retain and maintain its shape and fluffiness with daily use. To make the futons, we use many layers of cotton filling, piling layer after layer to the center of the futon repeatedly. The watoji stitch is then used to secure the cotton filling in the place which also acts as decoration. As cotton fibers are hollow and have a natural twist structure, our futons have excellent moisture absorption in the summer heat and cozy in the winter chill, making them suitable for all seasons. Our futons also have good resilience due to our choice selection of cotton. Sunning your futon regularly not only helps to fluff up your futon but also disinfect it. The cotton filling we used for stuffing Shiki Futon is specially selected so that our futons are plushy and yet firm to provide ample support for a healthy spine.

The small openings at the side of the pockets allow you to adjust your Shiki Futon Mattress for a perfect fit. To clean, simply put the cover into the washing machine.

Futon is very flat

The futon feels great but is not like the pictures even after putting it in the sun. The thickness is more like a topper and would recommend asking for extra filing as the pictures are a bit deceptive

This futon mattress is well-crafted, with good energy and love, don't get me wrong; however, it wound up being way too hard and way too thin for me. I am upper body dominant as far as my build is concerned, and my shoulders, especially, would go through to the floor. The shipping process was very quick, and I was happy with the purchasing experience, but I wound up having to sell it and lose quite a bit of money in the end. I am sure it is nice for someone out there. It just wasn't for me or my needs.

We are sorry to hear that the Shiki Futon is not suitable for you and we appreciate the fair review. :)

Our traditional Shiki Futon is stuffed only with pure cotton batting and while it's plush and voluminous, the cotton batting cannot hold up the body's weight unlike a Western mattress. What is done in Japan for a more comfortable sleep, is to place a urethane foam mat or latex mat under the Shiki Futon or to stack 2 Shiki Futon mattresses together.

We can customize our traditional Shiki Futon with extra cotton batting for a thicker and denser mattress. We also have an innovative Shiki Futon mattress that is made using latex foam and cotton batting, and we pair this with our bed topper so one can enjoy that fluffy feel of sleeping on a traditional Shiki Futon while having more cushioning and support underneath.

Please speak to us again if you are making a transition from sleeping on a bed to floor. We hope to understand your needs better and make recommendations that would make it more comfortable for first time users of traditional Shiki Futon users.

Happily as expected.

One would expect a beautiful high quality product from a century old Kyoto futon maker. It met expectations. The cover has a beautiful pattern. Shipping to Australia was quick and frictionless.

Being use to sleeping on a thick mattresses, I was a bit achey the first 1-2 mornings but am fine now. However, some people might find a futon too thin.

You are quite right to say that transitioning from a thick Western mattress to a Shiki Futon might be uncomfortable, especially if you are not used to sleeping on the floor as well.

While our futon has a certain height and volume, being filled only with cotton, it is soft and fluffy and does not support the body's weight like a foam and spring mattress. Here in Japan, to make it more comfortable, people sleep on 2 Shiki Futons are stacked together or they will place the Shiki Futon on a urethane or latex mat, to provide extra cushioning.
