Our craftsmen work meticulously to ensure that the futon can retain and maintain its shape and fluffiness with daily use. To make the futons, we use many layers of cotton filling, piling layer after layer to the center of the futon repeatedly. Our futons also have good resilience due to our choice selection of cotton. Sunning your futon regularly not only helps to fluff up your futon but also disinfect it. The cotton filling we used for stuffing Shiki Futon is specially selected so that our futons are plushy and yet firm to provide ample support for a healthy spine.

The small openings at the side of the pockets allow you to adjust your Shiki Futon Mattress for a perfect fit. To clean, simply put the cover into the washing machine.

Very Thoughtful and Quality Bed

It really is a lovely product from a lovely group of people. Very comfortable, pretty simple to maintain (flipping and rotating is easy), and great smell (like a comforting wheat-y scent). It’s recommended to put it in the sun 2 times per week, but so far fluffing+folding it before I leave for work and flipping+rotating when I change the sheets 1 per week works well. Just help it breathe, especially where you sleep in the bed. If you can follow recommendations tho, that’s better (I just live in a very rainy climate).

I’m on the larger side (6ft+ and 190ish) and for me I needed a little bit more cushion so I used a mattress topper underneath and for me it’s perfect. If you don’t have one, and you like a firm bed but want a safe bet, I’d recommend getting the mattress topper they have just for some extra cushion. Worst case, it becomes an extra protective layer and you get better breath ability.

From experience, if you have a slatted bed frame, you definitely need something between the mattress and the slats. If you can’t do tatami mats, coconut coir bed rugs are a solid alternative.

I move around a lot so it’s an extra plus that it’s very easy to pack away and transport during the moving process. All things considered, the whole set up is pretty affordable compared to a similar western mattress + bed frame options, especially when comparing value vs price.

Perfect Guest Bed

The Shiki Futon is an ideal guest bed for a small New York City apartment. When I tested it upon arrival, it was pillowy soft and yet firm. Just right! My nephew slept comfortably for several nights--and he would have told me if he was not comfortable. After his departure, it was easy to find space to store the mattress away. A perfect solution for house guests!

Great futon, scratchy cover

I absolutely love my shikibuton from Takaokaya. It is gorgeous to look at, so comfortable, and the customer service and delivery were excellent. Only negative is that the cover I ordered with it is a very rough fabric. I just use a regular double-size sheet on the shikibuton and it works great. If I were ordering again I would get the futon and not the cover.

Thank you for letting us know that you love the Shiki Futon we handcrafted you as well as our service. We used the same cotton fabric in making the Shiki Futon and its cover, and the fabric needs to be thicker and sturdy so that the cotton fiber will not escape. Regarding the roughness of the fabric, you can wash it a few more times with fabric softener to soften the fabric so it's more comfortable to sleep on.

I am truly lulled to sleep every night

I ordered the shikibuton set two months ago and I could not be any happier. The futon is handcrafted to an outstanding quality and looks so beautiful. The material is so comfortable that I now have a hard time persuading myself out of bed each morning. I am lulled to sleep every night and I never wake up with back pain or discomfort. The kakefuton is quite weighty and helps me to fall asleep too.
