Shiki Futon Mattress - Aizome-Fu

The Art of Restorative Sleep: Gently Unwinding Body and Soul
The Shiki Futon (Shiki Buton) is a traditional Japanese, hand-quilted mattress filled with 100% pure cotton. Placed directly on the floor or tatami at night, it offers a simple yet deeply restorative way to sleep. During the day, it can be easily folded and stored away—restoring a sense of openness and flexibility to your living space.

At Takaokaya, we believe that quality sleep is essential to everyday well-being. Each Shiki Futon is individually handmade in Kyoto by our skilled artisans, using time-honored techniques passed down through generations.

Great care is taken during the stuffing process, as it defines both the comfort and the longevity of the futon. In the hands of our artisans, layers of cotton are arranged with gentle precision—shaped and balanced one by one to create a surface made for rest. Special attention is given to the center, where the body’s weight naturally settles; here, cotton is thoughtfully layered to provide balanced support for a deeply comfortable night’s sleep.

What remains unseen is often where the most time is spent. It is this devotion to the hidden details that transforms a futon into something more—a sanctuary where the body releases, the mind softens, and true Kutsurogi begins.

The Aizome-fu Collection
This piece features our Aizome-fu fabric series, inspired by the deep, captivating hues of traditional indigo dye (aizome). Our Aizome-fu series reinterprets this timeless aesthetic, capturing the soulful depth and texture of traditional dye through modern textile artistry.

By utilizing advanced techniques rather than actual indigo, we are able to offer the classic, evocative look of indigo with the ease of contemporary fabrics—a perfect marriage of tradition and modern living.

about aizome-fu

Aizome (藍染め) is the Japanese word for indigo dye. The dye is naturally extracted from the leaves of the Indigofera Tinctoria plant, which creates a beautiful indigo shade of blue. Our Aizome-Fu fabrics with traditional Japanese patterns are meant to replicate that same beautiful look that the indigo dye creates.

why is our shiki futon so comfortable?

We place great emphasis on and take extreme care during the stuffing process because it determines the comfort level as well as the longevity of the finished products. Our craftsmen work meticulously to ensure that the futon can retain and maintain its shape and fluffiness with daily use. To make the futons, we use many layers of cotton filling, piling layer after layer to the center of the futon repeatedly. The watoji stitch is then used to secure the cotton filling in place which also acts as decorations. Though the process is tedious, our craftsmen at Takaokaya, desire to create the most comfortable futons, so that our users can enjoy true relaxation for a good night’s rest. Every night, you will be smiling as you feel your body unwinding and melting away the stresses of the day when you lay down on your Takaokaya futon for the best sleep ever.
