Made from Natural Rattan

Our zaisu is crafted from natural rattan — one of the most sustainable materials available. Unlike hardwood trees that require decades to mature, rattan regenerates quickly and grows at a remarkable pace.

Native to the rainforests of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra in Indonesia, rattan is a climbing palm that relies on surrounding trees for support as it reaches toward the sunlight. When responsibly harvested, it can be gathered without large-scale forest clearing, helping to support the preservation of existing ecosystems.

These rainforests are home to extraordinary wildlife, including the endangered orangutan. By choosing rattan, we take a small but meaningful step toward protecting these vital natural habitats.

Made by hand

The zaisu we have carefully curated is made in Indonesia. The factory is located in Cirebon, about 250 km from Jakarta. With its historic port, Cirebon has long been a center of rattan craftsmanship.

What began as artisans crafting household goods from leftover export materials has grown into the world’s largest rattan production region — now home to over 250 companies and approximately 3,000 family-run workshops.

Every piece is made entirely by hand. Each step — bending, assembling, wrapping, and weaving — reflects time-honored techniques passed down through generations.

Protective Cover Included

To help prevent scratches on tatami or flooring, the zaisu comes with a seat cover lined with felt-like fabric on the underside. This protective layer reduces friction and helps keep your floor surface safe and beautiful.
