Made to Be Enjoyed with Your Favorite Cover
This cushion insert is made to be used together with a cover.
The off-white fabric used for the insert is known as kibata. Its color is naturally created during the hot water washing process, without any dyes or bleaching. You may notice small black specks in the fabric—these are tiny particles from the cotton plant. They are completely natural, safe, and do not affect the quality or performance of the product.
The zabuton (座布団) is a traditional Japanese floor cushion with a history of nearly 1,000 years. Once considered a symbol of status and reserved for people of high rank, it is now widely used in homes across Japan.
A wide range of colors and patterns is available for the covers—enjoy selecting the one that suits your style.
All of our products are made-to-order. Each piece is handcrafted specifically for you once your order is confirmed. Please allow approximately 14-20 business days for production before your item is shipped.

In Japan, welcoming guests with a Zabuton (a traditional floor cushion) is a deeply rooted custom. It is a beautiful expression of Omotenashi—the traditional spirit of hospitality. By offering a comfortable place to sit, we warmly invite our guests to relax and truly enjoy their time with us.
Because of this heritage, Zabuton were long thought of in Japan as items reserved strictly for guests. In truth, however, they are incredibly versatile pieces designed to bring everyday comfort and freedom into your home.
A Zabuton is perfect for hosting, but it is just as wonderful as your own personal relaxation companion. When friends gather, you can simply lay a few down to instantly create a cozy, intimate seating area without needing extra chairs.
Even if sitting on the floor isn't a regular part of your lifestyle, living a little closer to the ground brings a unique, grounding sense of peace that warms the heart. In those moments, having your favorite Zabuton nearby makes the experience all the more comfortable.
Seamlessly blending into any space and gently complementing your daily life—the Zabuton is a beautiful, modest token of hospitality that enriches your home.
Each Kangu from Takaokaya is handcrafted by our team of Shokunin (職人), skilled craftsmen and women who carry knowledge and techniques passed down through generations. In our Kyoto studio, we devote ourselves wholeheartedly to creating Kutsurogi — true relaxation.
From the precise cutting of fabrics, to careful sewing, thoughtful stuffing, and the finishing touches, every step reflects the Shokunin’s dedication to detail. With care and sincerity, we approach our craft one piece at a time, ensuring each creation delivers comfort that touches the heart.
