Ojami Cushion - Aizome-Fu x Color

Aizome-Inspired Fabric × Beautiful Plain Color
This Ojami combines Aizome-fu fabrics—crafted to evoke the rich, elegant blue of traditional indigo dye (aizome)—with our uniquely dyed plain-colored fabric. The Aizome-fu fabrics feature traditional Japanese patterns, capturing the spirit of aizome in a modern, versatile form, without using actual indigo.

Our plain-colored fabrics, known as Murazome, are created using a special dyeing technique: the dyer removes the original color from the fabric while simultaneously applying a new one. This process produces the subtle streaks and irregularities that give our cotton fabrics their distinctive texture and character.

About the Ojami Cushion
The Ojami Cushion is our original creation—an iconic kangu inspired by otedama, a traditional Japanese beanbag toy. Originally designed for floor seating, it offers gentle posture support with a unique balance of firmness and resilience. Today, it is also loved as a back cushion, adding extra comfort to sofas and chairs.

Unlike typical soft cushions, Ojami gently lifts your hips, helping you sit comfortably in agura (cross-legged) or seiza (kneeling) with natural alignment.

It also works beautifully on sofas or chairs—simply place it behind your back to find your “just right” position. Enjoy deeper comfort, kutsurogi (relaxation), and subtle posture support.

A functional piece that also adds a refined decorative touch to any space.

story of ojami

The Ojami Cushion is the brainchild of Takaokaya’s 3rd generation CEO, Koichiro Takaoka. Being particular about relaxing, he has always found it a little uncomfortable to fold the traditional zabuton cushion in half when sitting on the floor. So he wanted to revolutionize the experience of sitting down by creating a cushion that everyone can “sit comfortably by raising our bottom”, as part of his lifelong quest of pursuing the art of relaxation and creating kutsurogi products that put a smile on everyone who uses them. Inspired by the ancient Japanese beanbag toy called otedama (or ojami in the Kyoto dialect) and coupled with his many years of knowledge gained from creating kutsurogi products and making cushions, the Ojami cushion which offers unsurpassed comfort, finally came to fruition.
