Making A Blanket of Love & Well Wishes

Making A Blanket of Love & Well Wishes

A not-so-usual Christmas tale of a gift of love from the heart, customization and Japanese craftsmanship.

Jan and Rebekah's recent holiday in Japan was more than just an exploration of breathtaking sights and cultural wonders. Amid their journey, they embarked on a heartfelt mission: to find an exquisite, handcrafted baby blanket as a Christmas gift for Rebekah's best friend's baby grandson. This wasn't just any gift; it was meant to symbolize love, thoughtfulness, and the rich charm of Japan's heritage.

While they were deeply impressed by Japan's cultural heritage and the preservation of its traditions and arts, their search for a blanket that encapsulated these qualities seemed increasingly unlikely as their trip neared its end. They even considered purchasing Japanese fabrics and having the blanket made back home in the U.S., but that felt like a compromise.

Determined not to give up, Jan continued to search for leads online, hoping to find a shop who can deliver the gift they envisioned. His persistence paid off when he discovered Takaokaya and our customizable services. Without hesitation, the couple visited our workshop the very next day, bringing with them two pieces of Furoshiki — traditional Japanese wrapping cloths — that they had carefully chosen from a specialty shop.

Jan’s vision was clear: he wanted a reversible baby blanket crafted from these symbolic and colorful Furoshiki fabrics. To ensure practicality, he requested for the blanket to be washable and easy to maintain so we recommended that he use Tencel as the wadding. To complement the intricate patterns on the fabric, he opted for simple quilting, allowing the vibrant designs to take center stage.

Before starting the crafting process, we sent the Furoshiki to a professional laundromat to ensure the colors wouldn’t bleed after washing. Once prepared, our craftsmen got to work, pouring their hearts into creating this one-of-a-kind technicolor baby blanket. Knowing the meaningful story behind the gift added a special significance to their efforts.

The result was more than just a blanket. It was a heartfelt collaboration, infused with the love and well-wishes of Jan and Rebekah, brought to life by the craftsmanship and dedication of our team. This unique piece now stands as a cherished keepsake, embodying the spirit of giving, the beauty of Japanese tradition, and the connections we forge through thoughtful gestures.
