Meditation may look simple from the outside, but anyone who has tried sitting in one spot for a while knows that comfort makes a big difference. Even small adjustments in height, support, or posture can completely change the experience.
At Takaokaya, our Zen Meditation Set lets you choose your preferred combination: a Kyoto Zabuton in L or XL, paired with an Ojami cushion in S, M, or L. The other day, I had the opportunity to try every combination myself to see what I felt worked best for me and to share my findings! For reference, I’m 180 cm tall with a medium build.
Before testing the cushions, I already had a preference when it came to seated positions on the floor. Sitting on the floor comfortably can be difficult, but with proper support under the hips and cushioning for the knees, it becomes much easier.
Personally, I tend to favor seiza (kneeling) over sitting agura (cross-legged). It’s easier on my upper back and allows me to maintain good posture for longer periods. Still, I tested both positions with each size combination to see how much the cushions themselves would change the experience.
The zabuton acts as the base cushion for your knees and legs, while the Ojami supports your hips and helps elevate the pelvis for better posture.
Seiza (kneeling)
When sitting in seiza, the XL Zabuton paired with the L Ojami quickly became my favorite! The larger Zabuton provided generous cushioning for my knees and ankles, while the height and plush support of the L Ojami helped keep my posture upright without strain.
Cross-Legged
When sitting cross-legged, I preferred the XL Zabuton paired with either an M or L Ojami. Both provided enough height to tilt my hips forward, helping maintain a natural spine position.

Initially, I assumed I would prefer the smaller cushions. I usually like products with a more compact form factor, but after testing everything, the larger cushions won me over.
The plush feel, added stability, and extra height made a noticeable difference. The support reduced pressure on my knees and allowed my body to relax more naturally into the position I tend to use most.
Again, comfort is such a personal thing. My preference for the XL Zabuton and L Ojami likely reflects my height, build, and tendency to sit in seiza.
For someone with a different build or sitting style, another combination might feel just right. That’s the beauty of having options: you can choose the setup that best supports your own way of sitting and meditating 🙂
